Review laws regarding unpaid internships


The end of summer means the end of summer internship programs at media companies around the country. For many of you, it also means it's time to gear up for the next crop of interns, be they fall semester, spring semester or even just summer of 2014; it's never too early to start sorting through candidates.
 
You might be aware that there has been a significant amount of action regarding unpaid internships, much of it centered on the media industry. ASNE Legal Counsel Kevin Goldberg has reviewed two recent cases decided in federal courts in New York and other lawsuits filed in the same state.

New credential restrictions block freedom of press


It's that time again. The start of a new academic year brings new credentialing requirements for reporters and publications to meet if they're going to cover scholastic sports. This has been a major Freedom of Information focus for ASNE over the past year. We are continuing to work with several major news organizations to ensure that members are aware of unreasonable credentials and individual credentialing restrictions issued by sports teams, leagues and governing bodies, as well as entertainment artists and venues around the country.

It's a first: ASNE and APME join forces for 2014 convention

For the first time, the two premier news leadership organizations in North America are joining forces to present a joint convention.

The American Society of News Editors and the Associated Press Media Editors have reached an agreement that will bring the two influential groups together in September 2014 in Chicago. A joint convention has been discussed for years but has never materialized until now.

Update on ASNE's fight for a federal shield law


There is still a lot of work to be done to pass a federal shield law. We were hoping that the Senate Judiciary Committee would move the bill at its Aug. 1 business meeting, but S 987 was quickly bogged down in a time crunch that was intensified by the committee's attention to judicial nominees and some conflict over the definition of a "covered person" (i.e. a journalist). 
 
The entire shield-law related portion of the Aug. 1 markup lasted a scant 10 minutes. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., moved forward his substitute to S 987, which incorporates several amendments that strengthen the protections offered to journalists.

"In this day and age it just makes sense to hold one terrific conference for leaders of news organizations," said ASNE President David Boardman, dean of the School of Media and Communication at Temple University and former executive editor of the Seattle Times. "We've always had great conventions. This will be bigger, better and smarter than ever."

ASNE joins effort to protect free speech on the Internet


ASNE was one of 23 non-governmental organizations, trade associations and media investors who were joined by 19 prominent law professors to compose a letter to the chairman and ranking minority member of the Senate Committees on Commerce, Science and Transportation and the House Committees on Energy and Commerce. The letter asked those committees to oppose a recent proposal by 47 state attorneys general to gut a key legal protection for free speech on the Internet. This protection is relied on every day by news entities across the country.

Update on ASNE's fight for government transparency


ASNE has provided several resources to members in two updates provided in past weeks, including a general call for support of the bill and a reminder of the bill's importance in the wake of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit's holding that New York Times reporter James Risen must testify as to the identity of a source relied upon in publishing his 2006 book State of War: The Secret History of the CIA and the Bush Administration. 

Now that ASNE has joined more than 70 media organizations and companies on a letter asking the Senate Judiciary Committee to pass S 987, you can add one more resource to the list. We are hoping this could occur as early as Thursday, Aug. 1, when the committee is slated to mark up the bill.
